A Sense of Soul
Mid-Century Warmth, Reimagined for Modern Living
You can tell a lot about a home by the way people gather in it.
In Karen and Patrick’s Brighton East renovation, the kitchen was never designed to simply look beautiful. It was designed for long pasta nights, grandchildren bounding in and out, friends lingering around the island bench, and the kind of entertaining where nobody really wants to leave.
That feeling shaped every decision.
At first glance, it’s breathtaking - rich walnut tones, softly layered stone, and a warm palette that feels both nostalgic and entirely current. But spend a little more time in the space and something else becomes clear: this kitchen has depth. Personality. History. A genuine sense of connection to the people who created it.
Because for this couple, it was never about chasing trends or recreating something they’d seen elsewhere. It was about building a home that reflected the way they live. A space with warmth at its core and functionality quietly built into every corner. And in true Wood Wizards fashion, the end result feels effortless… even though an enormous amount of thought sits behind every decision.
Where nostalgia meets now
Karen’s design direction was already formed before we first met.
Influenced heavily by the mid-century modern home she grew up in, her vision centred around earthy tones, natural textures, clean lines, and a calm sense of restraint. Not retro. Not overly stylised. Just a thoughtful nod to the warmth and simplicity that defined that era, translated for modern family life.
The kitchen formed part of a much larger home transformation and sits within a completely new extension to the original house. Karen and Patrick had completed multiple renovations before this one, so they knew exactly how important cabinetry would be in shaping the overall feel of the home.
And while Karen had selected many of the hero finishes herself, including the cabinetry colours and natural stone palette, what she wanted was reassurance. Confirmation. A collaborative team who could help refine the details, challenge certain ideas where needed, and ensure everything would work cohesively when brought to life.
That collaboration started the moment she walked into the showroom.
A conversation about Florentine Walnut quickly evolved into a deeper design discussion with Jordan and Kirstin, particularly around cabinetry profiles, placement, and how the materials could best support the architectural direction of the home.
Sometimes the magic isn’t about changing the vision. It’s about helping someone trust it.
A kitchen designed for real life
Beautiful kitchens are wonderful. Beautiful kitchens that genuinely work for a busy family? Even better.
Karen and Patrick entertain constantly. Pasta nights are serious business in this household, with Patrick proudly stepping into the role of resident chef while tomatoes grown at home regularly make their way onto the menu. Add five grandchildren into the mix and suddenly practicality becomes just as important as aesthetics.
The challenge here wasn’t creating a large kitchen. It was creating a kitchen that felt generous, calm, and highly functional - without visual clutter.
A walk-in pantry was non-negotiable from the beginning, not because they wanted a hidden “butler’s pantry”, but because they craved purposeful storage that allowed the kitchen itself to remain elegant and resolved. Drawers were prioritised heavily throughout the design too, ensuring everything could be accessed easily while supporting the rhythm of daily life.
Integrated appliances retreat quietly into the cabinetry, while clever internal systems work hard behind the scenes without demanding attention. It’s one of those spaces that immediately feels good to stand in. Open. Organised. Intuitive.
*Hot Tip*
If you’re introducing darker timber tones into your kitchen, balance them with lighter natural materials nearby. Soft stone, textured tiles, or muted paint colours help create warmth and depth without making the space feel visually heavy.
Florentine Walnut steals the show
There are kitchens where the timber plays a supporting role. This is not one of them.
Polytec Bari thermolaminate and flat profile melamine, both in Florentine Walnut Woodmatt, are undeniably the emotional centre of this design, bringing richness, depth, and that unmistakable mid-century warmth Karen was searching for.
The tone is deep and brown without feeling heavy, grounding the softer surrounding palette while adding a sense of maturity and soul to the room.
The use of the Polytec Bari thermolaminate profile was particularly important. Its gentle rounded detail softens the cabinetry composition and introduces subtle movement, giving the kitchen a sculptural quality without becoming overly decorative.
Alongside this sits Polytec Legato thermolaminate in Silk, a pale green-grey tone that acts almost like a visual exhale amongst the richer walnut elements. The contrast is soft rather than stark, allowing the materials to complement each other naturally rather than compete. Together, they create a palette that feels layered, warm, and deeply liveable.
Before & After
Gather, Cook, Repeat
Cooking sits at the centre of how this family connects, so the kitchen needed to support that rhythm with ease and intention.
NEFF ovens, an induction cooktop, integrated dishwasher, Panasonic microwave, and the dependable Qasair Lismore rangehood all contribute to a kitchen that performs as good as it looks.
The Liebherr integrated fridge and freezer pair quietly disappear into the cabinetry while delivering serious functionality behind the scenes, proving that practical decisions can still feel luxurious.
At the sink, the Gessi Emporio pull-out tap in Brushed Nickel paired with the Abey Lucia double bowl and single bowl sinks makes preparation and clean-up feel seamless, particularly during large family gatherings.
Even the polished concrete floors play their role. Heated underfoot and incredibly durable, they bring practicality to a busy family home while reinforcing the grounded, architectural feel of the design.
A marble moment worth waiting for
Karen had always wanted marble, and the Attila Diana Impero benchtops became a defining part of the kitchen’s identity. Neutral beige and cream undertones flow through the stone with soft, understated movement, creating a surface that feels timeless rather than trend-driven.
There’s something incredibly calming about it.
Against the warmth of the Florentine Walnut cabinetry, the marble lifts the room elegantly, introducing softness and light without taking away from the earthy feeling of the overall palette.
And because this is a home built around entertaining and gathering, the benchtops needed to do more than simply look impressive. They needed to support real life. Long lunches. Grandkids baking. Morning coffees. Overflowing platters shared with friends. Its generous proportions, durable natural surface, and forgiving neutral tones make it the perfect choice.
Tiles that glow, rather than shout
The Earp Brothers Raku Light Brown Gloss Mosaic splashback tiles bring another layer of richness to the kitchen, but in a wonderfully restrained way.
These tiles don’t scream for attention. They shimmer quietly.
Their glossy finish catches light differently throughout the day, creating subtle movement across the splashback and adding softness against the clean cabinetry lines. The organic tones echo the walnut joinery beautifully, reinforcing the warm mid-century influence without becoming overly themed.
It’s this kind of material layering that gives the kitchen its sense of maturity. Nothing here feels accidental.
The beauty of integrated living
One of the cleverest aspects of this kitchen is what you don’t immediately notice.
The handleless design allows the cabinetry to read almost architecturally, rather than as individual cupboards and drawers. Finger Pull square and mitred sets, paired with Push Catch mechanisms, create uninterrupted lines that feel calm and contemporary.
Only the integrated fridge section introduces the Lo & Co Isla Pull Handle in Nickel, and even this selection feels considered rather than purely functional. Its softly curved form adds a subtle sculptural detail while complementing the brushed nickel finishes elsewhere.
The result is a kitchen that feels streamlined without ever feeling cold.
The shelves that almost broke Patrick
Not all details come easily.
The solid timber floating shelves were custom-made by Karen and Patrick themselves, carefully stained to match the Florentine Walnut cabinetry. And according to Karen, it took more than a few attempts to get the colour exactly right.
But that persistence matters.
Because details like these are often the difference between a kitchen that feels done and one that feels deeply considered. The shelves soften the taller cabinetry elements, create breathing space within the layout, and offer room for those meaningful personal pieces that give the kitchen its personality. They also quietly capture the spirit of this entire project: collaborative, hands-on, thoughtful, and personal from beginning to end.
A kitchen with soul
What elevates this project is the emotional connection woven throughout. Karen’s styling choices weren’t selected simply because they looked good together. They carry meaning.
Artwork created by family members. Vintage finds collected over time. Pieces discovered in op shops are introduced thoughtfully amongst contemporary finishes. Open shelving displaying objects with history and sentiment rather than generic styling props.
You feel it immediately.
This isn’t a showroom kitchen pretending to be lived in. It’s a real family home with stories embedded into every corner. And perhaps that’s why it feels so inviting.
*Hot Tip*
The best kitchens don’t rely on brand-new everything. Mixing meaningful vintage pieces, family objects, or collected artwork into a renovation instantly adds character and prevents the space from feeling overly styled or impersonal.
Collaboration in its best form
This project worked so well because everyone understood their role.
Karen arrived with a strong creative vision. Patrick brought practical building knowledge as owner-builder. Wood Wizards contributed technical expertise, functionality, cabinetry detailing, and collaborative support. Kirstin helped finesse and elevate the material direction, confirming instincts and refining the finer moments that tied everything together.
No ego. No overpowering someone else’s ideas. Just genuine collaboration. Which is exactly what makes these projects so special. The best renovations rarely happen when one person controls every decision. They happen when trust exists between everyone involved.
A home that lingers with you
Jordan described this kitchen as a modern homage to mid-century style, and it’s hard to say it better than that.
Because while the references are there - the warmth, the timber, the simplicity, the earthy palette - nothing about this home feels stuck in the past. Instead, it feels timeless in the truest sense of the word.
And underneath all the exquisite finishes sits something even more important: a home designed entirely around the people living inside it. The way they cook. Gather. Entertain. Relax. Live.
That’s what makes this kitchen memorable. Not just the marble. Not just the walnut.
The feeling.

“We’ve completed several renovations over the years, and finding the right cabinetry company is honestly one of the hardest parts. From the very first meeting with Wood Wizards, we knew we’d found the right fit. I already had a strong vision, but Jordan, Darko and Kirstin helped finesse the details and made the whole process feel genuinely collaborative. The finished kitchen feels exactly how we hoped it would... warm, functional, calm and incredibly easy to live in. We entertain a lot, so the storage, layout and overall flow have made such a difference day to day. The quality and attention to detail are exceptional, and we couldn’t be happier with the end result.”

TOP TIP
If you’re designing a kitchen around entertaining, think beyond the “showpiece” moments and focus on how people actually move through the space. Generous bench areas, integrated appliances, deep drawers, and purposeful storage all help a kitchen feel calm and effortless when the house is full. The best entertaining spaces aren’t just beautiful to look at, they quietly support the chaos of real life without ever feeling cluttered.
