Warmth, by Design | Contemporary Living with Mid-Century Character

Karen and Patrick’s Brighton East kitchen is a study in warmth, restraint and beautifully considered detail. Contemporary and handleless in its execution, the design draws on a distinctly mid-century material palette - bringing together rich walnut cabinetry, softly coloured finishes and natural stone to create a kitchen that feels established, inviting and completely at home within its surroundings.

Working alongside Karen and Patrick, our team and Interior Designer Kirstin Sweet (Styled Haus) helped refine an already strong creative direction. Karen had a clear instinct for the colours and materials she wanted to introduce, so our role was less about reinventing the vision and more about making sure every element worked together - aesthetically, technically and functionally.

The cabinetry became the natural starting point. Polytec Bari thermolaminate in Florentine Walnut - Woodmatt brings gentle curvature and dimension to the joinery, complemented by Polytec melamine for a more streamlined finish. Against these deeper timber tones, Polytec Legato thermolaminate in Silk introduces a soft green-grey contrast, lightening the composition without losing the earthy quality that gives this kitchen so much character.

That balance continues through the Attila Diana Impero marble benchtops, where creamy neutral tones and natural movement soften the richness of the cabinetry. From there, the Earp Brothers Mosaic splashback tiles bring a subtle sheen and texture into the mix, sitting comfortably alongside the solid timber floating shelves made by Karen and Patrick. Even smaller details follow the same thinking, with Lo & Co Isla Pull Handles in Nickel providing just enough contrast against the timber while allowing its warmth to remain the focus.

And while the material palette gives the kitchen its character, just as much thought went into what sits behind it. Blum AVENTOS HK lift system, TANDEMBOX antaro drawers and ORGA-LINE container sets keep storage intuitive and beautifully organised, while the Hafele Hailo Euro Cargo ST60 bin takes care of one of the kitchen’s most-used essentials, neatly out of sight.

That same focus on function carries through to the appliances, sourced from E&S and integrated wherever possible to preserve the simplicity of the cabinetry. A Liebherr integrated fridge and freezer sit alongside NEFF ovens, induction cooktop and integrated dishwasher, with a Qasair Lismore rangehood and Panasonic microwave completing a set-up made for serious cooking. At the sink, Abey Lucia double and single bowls pair with a Gessi Emporio pull-out tap in Brushed Nickel, while Icon by Design Anton Bar Stools in Solid American Walnut and Aloe Green Fabric carry the kitchen’s timber and green palette right through to the final detail.

And that’s really where Grant Street comes together. No single material is asking for all the attention - the walnut, marble, gloss mosaic and soft Silk cabinetry each have their moment, then comfortably make way for the next. There’s a clear nod to mid-century design, but it never feels like a recreation of the past.

Instead, the finished kitchen feels warm, sophisticated and entirely Karen and Patrick’s. Contemporary enough for the way they live today, with enough character to feel like it has always belonged in their home. It doesn’t need to shout to make an impression - it simply feels right.

“We had a pretty clear idea of what we wanted the kitchen to feel like, but Wood Wizards really helped us bring all the pieces together. There were so many decisions along the way, and having Jordan, Darko and Kirstin there to guide us made it feel easy. We love how warm and considered it feels, but more importantly, it works brilliantly for the way we cook, entertain and spend time with family. The craftsmanship is beautiful and the whole kitchen just feels like us. We absolutely love it.”

TOP TIP

When working with rich timber cabinetry, give it room to breathe. Pairing Florentine Walnut with softer, quieter finishes - like the Silk cabinetry and neutral marble used here - keeps the space feeling warm and layered without becoming too heavy.
